In order to accomplish that, one of our promises is to provide our people room for growth, especially in their careers. One person who embodies this journey is Nischal Gurung, now Senior Account and Business Development Manager based in Auckland, New Zealand. From being in the hospitality operations for 15 years, Nischal has decided to put his extensive people experience to a different field. Here’s what he has to say.
Tell us about yourself and your current role.
I’m Nischal Gurung, and I’m the Senior Account and Business Development Manager at Cliftons, based in Auckland, New Zealand. I’m someone who thrives on conversations and connections, whether that’s with clients, colleagues, or over a good meal!
I work closely with clients to understand their needs and ensure their events run smoothly from start to finish. I’ve always had a natural affinity for people, and after more than 15 years in the service and hospitality industry, building strong relationships is second nature to me. What I really enjoy about this role is the human connection, being someone clients can turn to, have a genuine conversation with, and trust to deliver. Every day is different, and I love that I get to collaborate with a wide range of clients, help solve problems, and play a part in creating successful, meaningful experiences.
Any challenges you faced when you moved into this role?
I had to shift from a very hands-on, operational background to a more strategic, client-oriented position. I worked for two years as a venue manager at Cliftons Auckland and have more than a decade of experience in floor and back-of-house roles. I was used to fast-paced problem-solving and being involved in the day-to-day. I had to adjust my approach to long-term client relationship building, proactive planning, and commercial thinking.
Additionally, I have to navigate the industry’s evolving nature – from shifting client expectations to the impacts of new technologies. I must remain flexible and adopt a people-first mindset.
How have Cliftons helped you grow as a professional?
Cliftons gives me the space to refine and apply the skills I’ve developed over the years in a more strategic context. The transition from venue management to account management wasn’t abrupt; it felt like a natural progression where I could take what I already knew from operations and sharpen those skills through ongoing learning and collaboration. We had regular catch-ups, coaching, and shared knowledge across our teams.
Describe your experience working at Cliftons.
Over the past three years, I’ve been able to step into new challenges and evolve my role in a way that’s felt both supported and rewarding. Although there were learning curves at the beginning, the journey so far has been really positive. I’ve had the opportunity to push myself, contribute in various ways, and develop skills that continue to make the work engaging. Overall, it’s been a fulfilling experience, and I’m genuinely enjoying the path I am on.
Any advice to anyone interested in joining Cliftons?
I say go for it! Cliftons is a great place for anyone who’s looking to learn, grow, and take on new challenges. I have firsthand experience with real room for movement and progression here. If you’re motivated and open to learning, Cliftons can definitely support that journey.
