Five Years of Learning, Connection and Professional Growth

What began as a venue relationship between the Australian Institute of Training and Development (AITD) and Cliftons has evolved into a broader partnership supporting professional learning and connection across Australia.

For several years, 🔗AITD has used Cliftons venues to deliver face-to-face professional development programs for learning and development practitioners. Over time, that same national network of locations has increasingly supported another important aspect of AITD’s work: creating opportunities for L&D professionals to connect, share ideas and learn from one another.

A key part of this activity is driven by AITD’s volunteer Divisional Councils, which bring local learning communities together through events tailored to the interests and needs of practitioners in each state and territory. Recent sessions hosted at Cliftons venues have explored topics including emotional intelligence and leadership in times of disruption, insights from the AITD Conference and the implications of AI, behaviour change and learning culture, as well as the future role of AI and educational technology in workplace learning.

The relationship has also extended to Cliftons supporting AITD’s National Conference, strengthening connections between local communities, national conversations and the wider profession.

For AITD, the experience highlights the value of combining national consistency with strong local engagement. Access to suitable learning environments across multiple cities, supported by experienced event delivery teams, makes it easier to deliver professional development where people are, while enabling each division to respond to the priorities and interests of its own learning community.

As the profession continues to evolve, creating opportunities for practitioners to learn from peers, build networks and exchange ideas remains an important part of professional growth. Partnerships that support these connections help strengthen the broader L&D community and contribute to a more connected profession across Australia.

Beyond providing a space for learning, these events create opportunities for meaningful professional connection. In a profession centred on building capability in others, having the chance to exchange experiences, discuss emerging challenges and learn from peers can be just as valuable as the formal content itself. Whether attending a workshop, panel discussion or networking event, participants benefit from conversations that extend learning beyond the session and into their own workplace contexts.

The continued popularity of in-person events also reflects the important role face-to-face learning plays alongside digital development opportunities. While online learning provides flexibility and accessibility, bringing practitioners together in person creates a different dynamic, one that encourages deeper discussion, stronger relationships and more collaborative problem-solving. For learning and development professionals navigating rapid workplace change, these opportunities for connection remain highly relevant.

Five years of learning, connection and professional growth

Over the past five years, the topics explored through AITD events have evolved alongside the profession itself. Discussions have expanded from traditional leadership and organisational development themes to include emerging technologies, changing learner expectations, workplace culture, and the growing influence of AI. This progression reflects the increasingly strategic role learning professionals play in helping organisations adapt, innovate and build future-ready workforces.

The longevity of the relationship between AITD and Cliftons also demonstrates the value of consistency. For event organisers, working with a trusted venue partner across multiple locations simplifies planning and delivery, while for attendees it creates a familiar and professional environment that supports learning, networking and engagement. As programs and events continue to evolve, this foundation enables both organisations to focus on creating valuable experiences for Australia’s learning and development community.
