Identity politics: is it helping or hindering public debate?
Once upon a time, religion was the social glue for most people, then from the late 19th century, it shifted to nation-states. But in the age of social and digital media, identity is much more fractured. Whether it’s race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality or politics, we seem to now be in an age of identity politics where people consume their news through a tribal lens. Three journalists discuss what role identity politics is playing in the production of news and public debate.

Bio: Lachlan is a Senior Reporter and Presenter for 10 News First in Sydney, primarily covering NSW Politics. Previously he has been the network’s North American Correspondent and co-anchor of QLD’s 5 pm news bulletin.
